Baseball

The men started off the season hot with a University Athletic Association championship and a 6-2 record. The men’s first three games(when? Over break?) were in Vero Beach, Fla., winning two out of three. The next stop for the men was Sanford, Fla. for the UAA tournament games where they continued their winning streak until rain postponed three of their games. After the rain let up the men continued their UAA games where they again took two out of three. Senior designated hitter Andy Cannon was the hero of the UAA championship game against Case Western Reserve University as he drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore left fielder Alex Caghan was a combined eight for 18 and drove in six runs for UR in the UAA tournament.

Men’s Tennis

The trip started off on the wrong foot as the men dropped their first four matches in the first three days. As the men started to get more of a feel for their competition, they took down Wabash College and Drew University to end their break on a winning streak. Freshman Austin Armstrong shined by winning three of his individual matches at No. 3. With freshman talent on the team, the ‘Jackets look to gain experience from playing such a tough four-day schedule. The men now wait until March 23 to play their next match at Hobart College.

Softball

With a streaky offense and defense, the women couldn’t pull the squad to above 500 on their Florida road trip. The team had a promising start to their first game against John Carroll University, winning 6-5. They went on to drop their next two games before the UAA Championships. The women faced fierce UAA competition where they finished 4-4 in the tournament. Sophomore right fielder Kim Grimes went 10 for 21 with 12 runs batted in the UAA competition.

Squash

Five UR men traveled to Trinity University to play in the College Squash Association’s Individual Nationals on the March 5 and 6. Sophomore Beni Fischer made it to the semifinals where he lost to Colin West of Harvard University. In the A Division, junior Hameed Ahmed lost on the first day to Nils Mattsson of U.S. Naval Academy. Sixth-seed senior Jim Bristow was upset in the first round by Trinity’s Antonio Salas. As for the men’s B Division, sophomore Matt Domenick lost in the second round.

Track and Field

The women’s team took home 13th place out of 64 teams at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships. Junior thrower Yanever Fonge finished sixth overall in the 20-pound weight throw, which earned her a trip to the NCAA tournament. Sophomores Kenisha Smith and Niki Bourque and juniors Casey Green and Jacqueline Cinella broke a school record in the 4×200 meter relay and finished third. That relay team also finished in third place in the 4×400 meter relay. Cinella also took home fifth place in the 800-meter.

The men’s team didn’t fare as well, finishing in 27th out of 65 teams. Juniors Francisco Ramirez and A.J. Lee and sophomores Gregory Hartnett and Andrew Fleisher finished in fifth place in the 4×800 meter relay. Ramirez also individually finished sixth in the 500-meter.

Women’s Lacrosse

After a strong performance in their season opener against Susquehanna University the women’s lacrosse team struggled to find their footing the rest of the week. The women dropped the last two games of the break to Lynchburg College last Tuesday and to Nazareth College last Thursday. Senior midfielder Amanda Case scored nine goals over the three-game span. Freshman goalie Frances Cooley started all three games in goal and looks to be a promising addition for the women this season.

Women’s Tennis

The women’s team awed in Orlando, Fla. over the break as they took two out of the four colleges and universities played. Junior captain Lia Weiner and freshman Frances Tseng impressed by outing the No. 2 ranked doubles team of the Northeast region from the College of New Jersey. Together they took out three out of four competitors throughout the week. Against second ranked Emory University, the women fell 2-7. They finished off the trip with an easy 9-0 victory over Malone University. The women have a long hold off until they play their next match against Skidmore University at home on March 21.

Obviously, every ‘Teddy’s Travels’ needs adventure, and after our unremarkable stay in Ithaca, I began to wonder if perhaps we would break the streak.
