UR’s women’s lacrosse opened their Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association season on the road with a loss to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on April 2 and a win over Vassar College on April 3.During the RPI game, the Yellowjackets had a rough first half and were only able to score one goal in contrast to RPI’s five goals. They were only able to make six shots on goal, while RPI managed eleven.In the second half, UR began to come back, and had twice as many shots on goal as RPI, but still was unable to pull out a win. Overall, UR and RPI were close with shots on goal, groundballs and draws controlled. However, RPI established an advantage with greater shot accuracy and more turnovers than the Yellowjackets. RPI goaltenders also dominated with ten saves versus UR’s four saves. Freshman Heidi Davies proved an offensive asset as she was the lead scorer for UR with three goals, and also one assist. Senior Samantha Krawitzky had one goal and two assists, junior Rachel Hawley had one goal and sophomore Lisa Aronoff had one goal. After a 9-6 loss to RPI on April 2, the Yellowjackets came back to shut out Vassar the very next day. Five goals were scored in the first half and six in the second half for a total of 11 goals. Vassar had a total of 13 shots on goal during the game but senior Yellowjacket goaltender Stephanie Bristol managed to save all of them.The Yellowjackets dominated the game with 27 shots on goal and with control of eight out of nine draws. Vassar and UR were equal with ground balls picked up and turnovers. Senior Katie Riegel and junior Elizabeth Sack each had three successful shots on goal, and assisted two goals and one goal prospectively. Early on in the second half, Sack was able to put in two of those goals in 45 seconds. Senior Sarah Walker scored two goals for the Yellowjackets, and single goal-scorers were Hawley, junior Emily Riegel and freshman Christina Montano. Hawley also had one goal assist along with junior Jess Colbourne.The women’s lacrosse team’s record now stands at 2-5 overall and 1-1 in UCAA action. Keller can be reached at rkeller@campustimes.org.
