The Chinese Millennium Council is extending an invitation to one and all to celebrate the Chinese Millennium New Year, 2001. They will be presenting Mr. Phillip Ying as their celebrity keynote speaker, violist of the Ying Quartet and assistant string professor at Eastman.

The event will be held on Monday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Meliora Grand Ballroom. Tickets are $35 per person and need to be reserved by Monday, Jan. 29.

About the speaker

Phillip Ying is a well-known artist in the world of strings. He has studied with such masters as Sonja Foster, Roland Vamos, Walter Trampler, Donald McInnes, Karen Tuttle and Martha Katz. Throughout his entire education, he has been a member of the Ying Quartet, which consists of himself and three of his siblings.

The Ying Quartet

In 1989, the quartet won the International Cleveland Quartet Competition. Four years later, the Yings were honored with the prestigious Naumberg Chamber Music Award. They have done many concert tours in North America, Japan, Germany, England, Sweden, Austria, Estonia, Taiwan, Australia and France. They were also honored with summer residencies at Tanglewood, Aspen, Brevard and Interlochen.

The Yings? diverse work has been the subject of many media profiles, including CBS Sunday Morning, The New York Times, and St. Paul Sunday Morning. Radio performances and recordings include National Public Radio?s ?Voice of America.?

Individually, they were award winners in Naumberg, Washington International, Tchaikovsky and Coleman Chamber Music competitions. The Yings have also been participants in the Norfolk, Kapalua, Colorado, Caramoor and San Miguel music festivals, among others. The Ying Quartet was also the resident ensemble in Jesup, Iowa as part of a Rural Residency Initiative from 1992 to 1994. Since 1996, they have been members of the Eastman faculty.
