Sarah Palin and Laura Bush plan trips to Rochester
Former Alaskan governor and vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin and former first lady Laura Bush will be making two separate trips to the Rochester area.
Palin will be visiting The Borders on 1000 Hylan Drive near Marketplace Mall this Saturday, Nov. 21, from 6 – 9 p.m., to promote her new book, ‘Going Rouge,” which was released on Tuesday. The event is free to the public but limited to a first-come basis. Palin’s Rochester trip is the second stop on her book promotion tour that kicked-off in Michigan on its release date.
Palin has been criticized for avoiding big market cities like San Francisco and Washington D.C. and instead choosing locations such as Rochester, Washington, Pa. and Roanoke, Va.
Bush will be a guest speaker at the Lakeside Foundation’s 21st Annual Gala Dinner on Dec. 11 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. The dinner will benefit Lakeside Health System, a 181 bed-facility in Brockport. Those who are interested can still contact Lakeside Foundation for tickets at $165.
Bush was chosen because of her advocacy for women’s health issues and policies. Former guests for the annual dinner include Colin Powell, Barbara Bush, George H.W. Bush and Walter Cronkite.
Bush has been on a speaking tour since last spring.
20-year anniversary of Jesuit slaughter in El Salvador
On Monday, Rochester Committee on Latin America, Pax Christi Rochester and School of America Watch Rochester sponsored a vigil in remembrance of the 1989 killing of six Jesuits and two women by soldiers in the Salvadorian army.
Some of the soldiers were believed to have been trained at the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Ga., which is currently known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. The school is often criticized for training soldiers of oppressive Latin-American nations in different means to torture and repress protesters.
About 35 people attended the vigil outside the Kenneth B. Keating Federal Building on State Street to mourn the victims.
Fraternity donmates to avoid underage drinking charges
The SUNY Geneseo chapter of Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity opted to make a $5,000 donation to Theresa House, a hospice residence, in order to avoid charges for distributing alcohol to minors.
Fraternity brothers were convicted of serving alcohol to underage drinkers on Sept. 10 and 15.
Livingston County District Attorney Thomas Moran gave the brothers the option of pleading guilty to unlawfully dealing with a child and second-degree criminal nuisance and a fine or making a donation to a local nonprofit group.
