The UR women’s tennis team finished its regular season on Saturday afternoon with a perfect game against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles.
All of the members of the women’s team rallied together to defeat the Eagles, 9-0.
The ‘Jackets decisively swept all of the singles matches. Senior Alexa Perry started the winning trend with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 singles position. Perry had played at the No. 2 spot for most of the season. Freshman Elana Polivy defeated Brockport’s Ashley Balling at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Both senior Colleen Cross and freshman Diane Samuels did not allow their opponents to score a single point at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles spots, respectively. Each tallied 6-0, 6-0 wins.
Freshman Maria Janda won the No. 5 singles match, 6-0, 6-2, and freshman Nishi Javeri rounded out the ‘Jackets’ dominance on the court with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
The women’s winning streak carried into the doubles matches. Freshman Lia Weiner and Perry teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-6. Polivy and Cross were all business and didn’t allow the No. 2 doubles Brockport players to score any points against them, banking an 8-0 win. Javeri and Samuels rounded out the No. 3 match with a dominating 8-0 win.
These winning sets against Brockport are the perfect finishes to the regular-season college careers of seniors Cross and Perry.
Weiner, who played in the No.1 singles spot for most of the spring season, finishes the regular season with a 7-2 record at this position.
UR finished its regular season with a 10-6 record and will travel to Washington University in St. Louis for the University Athletic Association Championships, which start on Friday.
