Kappa Delta, one of the six Panhellenic sororities at the University, held their second annual Shamrock 5K run to raise money to prevent child abuse in America.
Apart from the run, the coordinators of the event, senior Kirstin Barry and sophomore Julie Pearlman drew a plethora of runners to the event. Personally, running on a Saturday morning and feasting at the barbecue catered by UR Dining Services certainly hit the spot. Dining Services went the extra mile by having all of their food follow the shamrock theme.
Kappa Delta annually holds an event where they raise money for the prevention of child abuse. Because the University chapter felt like going the traditional route and just having students pay for watching performance groups, they went the extra mile and had all four a cappella groups perform as well.
According to Barry, there were about 100 runners out of the total 201 people who donated and attended the actual event.
Their attendance included the men’s soccer team, several members of the Rochester community, among others. Winner of the race was junior Travis Kroot.
‘Everyone seemed really excited about the event in general,” junior and Kappa Delta sister Sharon Gunther said. ‘People were running and were really involved. A lot of us were there to cheer all of the runners on so it provided positive reinforcement.”
‘They had so many different people there and it was early enough in the morning so the weather wasn’t that bad,” junior Susan Adler said. ‘I thought that the course was very well marked, which was great because I actually don’t get to run outside very often. I thought that having the sorority sisters cheering you at certain bench marks was really encouraging.”
Several restaurants in the Rochester area decided to contribute to the cause by donating food. Stores included the Pita Pit, Bagel Bin and gift certificates from Simply Crepes, one of which was given to the winner of the race along with a drawstring backpack, courtesy of the Admissions Office and a free pita from the Pita Pit. Fairview Suites also donated two one-night stays that were raffled off, and Balloon Effects, a party store in the Rochester area, provided Kappa Delta with ribbons and streamers that followed their color scheme with which to decorate the campus.
Hasan is a member of the class of 2012.
