The men and women in yellow and blue had many impressive performances this past weekend at the Cornell Kane Invitational. Among the women’s performances were four Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference meet-qualifying performances, an NCAA provisional qualifier, and a new school record. The men had two ECAC qualifiers and three New York State Championship qualifying performances.

For the women, Senior Yaneve Fonge led the charge with impressive throws in both the shot put and the weight throw. She easily qualified for the ECACs in the shot put with a throw of 12.11 meters, which garnered her third place. In the 20-lb weight throw, Fonge had a lifetime-best toss of 17.28 meters and placed first in a field of over 40 competitors. She squashed the previous school record of 17.09 meters, which she threw last weekend at the Hamilton Invitational. Her throw is now ranked No. 5 in all of Division III and earned her the title of “Field Event Performer of the Week” by the New York State Collegiate Track Conference.

Junior Lauren Norton finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:58.81, easily qualifying her for the ECACs. Sophomore jumper Carina Luck also had a big day — she took sixth place in the triple jump with a personal best of 11.09 meters, 2cm short of the school record and 6 inches behind the NCAA provisional mark. The five jumpers that scored ahead of her were all Division I competitors from Cornell. Luck also placed 14th in the Long Jump with a bound of 5.01 meters.

The 4×400-meter relay team, comprised of freshman Abby Zabrodsky, senior Casey Green, junior Sarah Hutchinson and sophomore Claire Crowther finished 3rd overall with a  time of 4:13.51, placing only behind 2 Cornell teams.

Sophomore Bridget Kruszka ran a time of 1:26.57 in the 500-meter run and earned sixth place. She later teamed up with freshmen Carrie Gulvin and Zoe Edmunds and sophomore Emily Kleiman in the 4×800-meter relay to place sixth with a time of 10:30.90.

The men had just as solid a day at the Kane Invitational. Senior A.J. Lee started the male effort off by taking 3rd in the 500-meter run (1:06.95), earning him a spot at the ECACs.

Later, Lee, along with classmate Frank Ramirez, junior Andrew Fleisher and freshman Yuji Wakimoto competed in the 4×800-meter relay. The team ran a time of 7:55.01, qualifying for the ECACs, and just barely missed the school record (they were off by less than 3 seconds).

Senior Craig Baumgartner earned 5th place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:29.64, while Ramirez added a 9th place in the 800-meter run in 1:58.25 — both automatically qualifying for the NYS Championships.

Senior Justin Lyttleton finished off the day with a 22nd-place finish in the 60-meter dash. His time of 7.30 seconds was a personal best.

Teddy’s Travels: Ithaca, NY

Obviously, every ‘Teddy’s Travels’ needs adventure, and after our unremarkable stay in Ithaca, I began to wonder if perhaps we would break the streak.

Whatever happened to the dormitories of yesteryear?

Two images come to mind: One is of cinder block-walled rooms hidden behind brutalist edifices, and the other is of air-conditioned suites bathed in natural light.
