It’s never too early to start planning for Martin Luther King, Jr., day and the celebrations there-around. A holiday that often goes unnoticed as students return from the frigid mayhem of winter break, the College Diversity Roundtable is making some power moves to ensure that Dr. King gets his due this year.

There are two events scheduled for the week following our return to UR. The first is held on Monday, Jan. 19 – a day that UR wisely cancelled classes. At 4:45 p.m. there will be a Peace March, assembling on the stairs of Rush Rhees and proceeding across the quad to the Interfaith Chapel. Immediately following the march at 5 p.m., the chapel will host a collection of speakers and musical performances honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Capping the events will be “dinner and dialogue,” thereafter. The event is free to all students, with tickets available at the Common Market.

Jan. 19 and the days following have an assortment of other events planned, as well. Professor Samuel Roberts from Columbia University will speak on the idea of “Urban Anxiety – Tuberculosis Surveillance and African Americans in the Twentieth Century,” at 1 p.m. in the Arthur Kornberg Medical Research Building.

Other events remain to be announced, but the week culminates on Friday, Jan. 23 with the fourth annual Martin Luther King Commemorative address, at 6 p.m. in Strong Auditorium.

Though it’s over a month away, the CDR wanted to give everyone a heads-up now, so that everyone can participate in perpetuating the lessons and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King when we all return to school next semester.

Top 10 best albums of 2024

It’s been an amazing year for music — some of my favorite albums of the decade came out, pop music thrived, as did rap, metal, and overall there were pretty much great albums coming out consistently every week.
